Orphanage at Annai Ashram
There are 170 girl children in the age group of 6-18 years residing in the
Ashram and studying in Annai Girls Hr.Sec.School and Pulavar Devarajan Elementrary School.
This unit receives maintenance grant from the State Government. A well furnished building of
11,000 sq.ft has been constructed to house the orphans, thanks to

- Rs.13,00,000 from Terrades Home, Netherlands
- And donations from the generous public
- Sri Nandalal Sha of Sri Gopaldas family has donated Rs.50,000
as working capital for the Ashram
The official Trustee of Tamil Nadu Govt, Chennai provides for special food to the inmates of the Ashram on
the festival days every year.

Dr. Kamalamma Balakrishnan Home for the Aged
This Home was started in 1991 with the noble aim of providing not merely accomodation but love
and care too, to the neglected and uncared for women past the age of 60. Dr. Kamalamma Balakrishnan an eminent
doctor practising at Chennai was generous enough to donate 15 cents of land near Annai Ashram Campus.
It was her munifience that helped the Sangam to meet teh day-to-day expenses of the Home for the first two years when
there was no grant from the Govt. for the maintenance fo the Home. It would not have been possible to put up the buildings
for the Home but the generous donations received from

- Senganur Dr. Mahadevan, USA: US$ 4000
- Dr. Soundararajan of Michigen: Rs. 50,000
- Water Aid London (for construction of 10 Bathrooms , 10 Toilets and 2 big water tanks): Rs. 4,00,000
Sri Venkataramani of Mangalam Estates came forward to put up a building at a cost of
Rs. 1,50,000 the hospice for the terminally sick people who needed personal care and
attendance.
Water facilities of the hospice has been made possible by donation of Rs. 15,000 made by
Madras Sugal and Damani and Rs. 10,000 by Sri Nandalal Sha of Gujarat.
We wish to mention with gratitude the generous donation of Rs. 50,000 made by Dr.Kamalammal Balakrishnan
and Rs. 50,000 by Sri Nandalal, Gujarat, Rs. 25,000 by Smt. Thilagavathi, Staff, Doordharshan (Retd) for the
purchase of the adjacent land for the expansion of the Home.
The Home for the Aged is well furnished and is situated in a peaceful environment. Besides this, there are
seperate rooms called Retirement Home to accomodate 20 persons. The inmates enjoy room service facility and are
provided medical care.

Annai Ashram Press
This is well equipped Printing Press giving vocational training to poor girls, deserted women and many other
disadvantaged women in composing, printing and book binding. 15 girls work in the press. The press receives
order from BHEL(Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited), Tamil Nadu Transport Corporation and Bharathidasan
University.
The building housing the press was conxtructed with the help of generous donations received from
our well wishers. Special mention should be made of the donation of Rs. 50,000 made be by
N. Gopladas Jewellers and Rs. 30,000 received from Arumpavoor Periyanattar Sri. Muthu Venkatachalam Reddiar.
Caritas India gave Rs. 75,000 for the working expenditure.

Agarbatti Unit (Incense Stick Manufacturing Unit)
This center is a small scale unit in which 35 women are employed. Its products, which include Agarbathi, Javvadu,
Sambirani, Sandal Paste garlands, perfumes etc., are marketed through Chinthamani Super Market, Khadi Craft
and Sarvodhaya Sangam.

Working Women's Hostel
Built with the help of the Central Government grant of Rs.15 lakhs and Sangam's share of 5 lakhs has 24
rooms with 20 toilets and 20 bathrooms. There is also provision for indoor games and play field providing
accomodation facilities in a peaceful, quiet area. Since the charges are very reasonable, this hostel
is a boon to women coming from lower middle class.
There are 150 Children of the age 1-5 taken care of by teachers who have undergone
training as Bala Sevikas. The children are given nutritious noon meal and evening tea for which we receive grants
from Central Social Welfare Board. These children come from families below poverty line and most of the
parents are daily wage earners, agriculture labourers and those working in beedi industry.
They leave the children in the Creche in the morning before they go for their work and pick them up in the
evening on their way to home fro their work place. Children above the age of four are given
training which helps them get admitted to class I.

Pulavar Devarajan Elementry School
Thanks to the donation of Rs.2,50,000 made by Pulavar Devarajan, a retired Tamil Teacher, Tholurpatti.
In June 1993, an Elementary School was started and it was named after its donor. Children from families
below poverty line and residing in Kamaraj nagar, Sempattu and other places in the neighbourhood of Annai
Ashram benefit by the oppurtunity provided by the school. There are ab out 450 students studying in classes I to
V.
There are 9 trained teachers who are paid by the Management since the school does not receive any teaching grant
even though it has been approved by the Govt. of Tamil Nadu. Though the students are given noon meal under the
Govt. Scheme, they are not give textbooks or notebooks or uniforms as it is done other aided schools.
The classes are conducted in a pucca builiding constructed at a cost of more than Rs.20,00,000 with 12 classrooms.

Annai Girl's Hr. Sec. School
Founder President of Tamil Nadu Pengal Nala Sangam Smt.Veerammal took the intiative in
establishing the school in 1984 by donating Rs. 50,000 the amount she received on retiring
from All India Radio. With the help of further donations from the public an endowment fund
of Rs. 1,00,000 was created to help in running the Girls' School in the Airport area where
there was no High School for girls then.
An area of 3 acres was donated by Bhoodan Board for constructing the school to support the school
to help those students who could not even afford to pay the bus fare to go to town to pursue their
studies. An endowment fund of Rs. 50,000 was created to support the school.
Even though the school is recognized by Tamil Nadu Government as a Higher Secondary School, no teaching
grant is received from the Government to pay the salary of the 12 qualified teachers who are handling
Higher Secondary Sections. Hence teh Management has to bear this financial commitment. The school has a
student strength of 1000.

Child Labour School (CHEERS)
CHEERS School was started in 1999. So far 150 children have benefitted by the programme. About 140 children of this
school have joined the regular school to continue their education. The children studying in the school are also
taught tailoring, music, craft, dance etc.
The parents of these children receive from the Government, Rs.100 per child, per month, which is deposited in Post
Office Savings Account. These children have won appriciation for the cultural programmes presented by them on the
occasion of Independence Day, Republic Day and other public functions.
Our Sangam has received recognition and awards from the District Collector. The teachers working in the school are
given regular training in play-school-method by Teacher Training Institute and other educational institutions.

One Year Certificate Course for Nursing Assistant
The Sangam has started this one-year job oriented course in the year 2004-05. This unit gives admission to
children who have completed +2 (XII standard). The first set consisted of 20 students and some of these
poor students are sponsored by a few philanthropists.
The second set had 22 candidates and all 42 students are now employed in hospitals in and around Trichy.
